Why You Have To Self Promote

If you’re an accountant or professional, chances are you do great work. No doubt you are do some hardworking, dependable, deadline driven and may even be the person who is relied upon.

Yet when it comes to career progression you may well not be moving forward as much as you had hoped.

One reason is that you are the best kept secret. You know you do some great work. Some of your colleagues may know this too.

On the other hand do those who have influence and make the decisions about who gets what when it comes to career and salary rises aware of how good you are?

Now I know that if you are from a professional background you might well think that doing good work will get the rewards.

Sadly in my experience doing good work is not enough.

You have to talk positively about what you have done and the difference that it has made. 70503069 - man holding a card with a text promote yourself

Now I am not advocating that you spend of all of your time promoting you and why you are a real asset.

At the same time get into the habit of speaking positively about what you have contributed.

It’s also worthwhile thinking about how you interact and contribute in meetings and events.

Maybe you have great ideas but keep them under wraps because you doubt whether they are significant enough.

Find what works for you and whatever you do don’t fall into the trap of getting stuck in your career because you are the best kept secret.
