Why Should We Appoint You

the_big_question_9192When you go for a job interview it is almost guaranteed that you will have the opportunity to explain why you are the right candidate for the job.  The real question is what are the benefits to us of employing you?

The trouble is that many candidates are in my experience reluctant to speak about what they can offer a potential employer.  For professional people who might be fairly introverted this can be a real struggle.

They tell themselves that:

  1. It will be obvious to any potential employer.
  2. They can’t blow their own trumpet.
  3. They don’t want to come across as bragging and boasting.
  4. This is not the done thing in my profession, industry or sector.

On the other hand you can look at it differently.  The potential employer is giving you the opportunity to showcase what you have to offer.  In many ways they are inviting you to tell them why you are the obvious choice.

Some will realise this and very clearly and succinctly highlight the benefits to the employer of having them on their team.  Many will struggle and give a weak or even poor answer to this question.

In my experience there is a difference between those who give a good answer and those that blow it.  You might think it all about confidence.  It may well be a factor.

In reality the people who respond well to this question have a well prepared answer in their mind that they have practised several times out loud ahead of the interview.

What they say is not generic.  It is targeted and focused on the specific role that they are being interviewed for.  They have studied the job description, the advert and the person specification.  They have researched the company.

As a result the 5 things they say really sets them apart from other candidates who talk in generic terms and sound like any run of the mill candidate.
