If you are like most people, you spent a lot of time, energy and money getting the right professional qualifications so that you could build a successful career.
Right now you may have a job that you enjoy. You like the people, the work and even the organisation.
You look around and on the face of it see others who are progressing faster than you. They seem to be getting involved in some hugely interesting projects.
Now you start to think. Maybe it’s time to move on. However, you’re not entirely sure or convinced.
It’s a big decision and one that we all probably face several times during our career.
Is there a definitive answer to the question? Probably not if I’m completely honest. A lot depends on you and your motivators.
So what are some of the questions I would suggest you reflect on when deciding if the time is right to move jobs?
Am I Still Fired Up Every Morning?
In other words do you look forward to going to work every day or have you reached the point where even the thought of it fills you with dread.
Am I Still Growing?
This was always a big one for me. I tend to be the type of person who likes a challenge. When it becomes routine or maintenance, I’m still motivated but not as much as when there is an element of stretch and growth.
Am I Acquiring The Right Experience?
Everyone has their own ideas and aspirations on how far they want to go in their career. The further you want to climb the career ladder, the greater the need to get the breadth of experience.
You need to be thinking about whether you are acquiring the right experience to meet your short, medium and longer term career goals.
Am I Getting The Opportunity?
Some are in what might be described as the fast track. They are the people who often get access to the best projects and best professional development support to name just a few.
If you are not getting access to the type of opportunities you want, perhaps it is time to consider your next step.
In reality the decision to move jobs is a significant one. So make sure you fully consider when is the right time and your motives for making that move right now.
