I recently read an excellent book called Watertight Marketing. The book focuses on how leaks in your marketing bucket might be impacting on how effective your marketing is.
It got me thinking about landing your next job. Do the right things and you increase your chances of success. Conversely if there’s leaks in the process you reduce your success.
So how many of the leaks below are getting in the way of you landing your next job?
#1The Mindset Leak
“Whether you think you can or think you can’t you are probably right.” You probably have heard this quote several times.
Whether we like it or not, your thinking has a big impact on your results.
In a positive frame of mind you recognise it will be achievable. In a negative frame of mind you will see only the barriers.
How would you rate your mindset (1-10), where 1 is completely negative and 10 is completely positive?
#2The Personal Insight Leak
To land your next job you need to market yourself effectively. To market yourself you have to have real insight.
This insight includes knowing your best skills and attributes. Knowing your achievements. Knowing what you have to offer your next employer.
How much personal insight do you have at present?
#3The Marketing Leak
The effectiveness of your marketing determines whether you get invited to interview or not.
Your CV, LinkedIn Profile, Network, Cover Letters are all vitally important.
Increasingly you have to get better at understanding what the applicant tracking software that is been used is looking for when reviewing CV’s.
How good are your marketing efforts in raising awareness, getting interest and ultimately getting you invited to interview?
#4The Selling Leak
Getting job interviews is vital. Ultimately you want to convert interviews into offers.
Easy to say and difficult to do in my experience.
Proper preparation is key. Few accountants and professionals do anything approaching enough in my experience. Confidence plays a big part too.
How effective are you at selling yourself in the job interview and getting the job offer?
If you are struggling to land your next job, chances are one or perhaps several of the above are getting in the way of your success. Determine which is creating the biggest barrier and start working on this.
