Are You In Danger Of Being Like BHS?

BHS (British Home Stores) is a long established retailer on the UK high street. Recently it was announced that they were in trouble financially. There was lots of discussion if it was going to be the next retailer to disappear. In many ways it has lost its way and is out of touch.

Now you may be asking yourself what’s the connection to you. So let me explain.

The retail world and most business sectors have gone through some pretty radical change. Amazon is a great example but it’s not the only one. Look at banking and telecoms. They are very different to what they were historically.

In short business across the board has changed.

If you are an accountant or professional this change has implications for you. Chances are if you are like a lot of professionals you focused a lot of time and energy in getting professionally qualified.

You knew that to get beyond a certain level you were going to have to get the qualification.

The question I would ask you is what have you done to stay relevant as businesses and organisations go through change?

If you work in a really big organisation then chances are that they have a really structured programme for continuing to develop you.

If you are like many who work in much smaller organisations chances are the same level of structured CPD is not likely to be in place.

The reality is that if you are not taking personal responsibility for your professional development you are at real risk of becoming stuck in your career. You can end up becoming frustrated and failing to fulfill your potential.

So if you want to avoid becoming out of touch like BHS take the time to think about taking action to grow personally and professionally.
