Yesterday I attended a Business Convention organised by Acumen Business Law at The Grand Hotel in Brighton. The event was attended by over 150 people and is a testimony to what can be achieved when you have leadership and team working.

At Acumen it is crystal clear that the whole culture of leadership and team working comes from the top. Penina Shepherd who set up the business four years ago in the middle of a recession has successfully grown the business year on year and they now employ around 14 people.

The first thing that is really evident from listening to Penina and speaking to people on the team is that they have a very clear purpose about what they are trying to achieve through their work.

Secondly they are willing to take risk. Putting on an event of this scale and size takes a lot of courage.

Thirdly everyone seemed to have absolute clarity about their role in making the event a success.

Fourthly they don’t take their people for granted. The contribution of the whole team whether they were in attendance or not was recognised.

Finally they clearly take a lot of time to recruit people who are a good fit for the business and team. I spoke to a number of their people including back office staff like the Office Manager and Financial Controller and it was clear that they shared exactly the same ethos as those who were client facing.

We can sometimes get lost in reading about all the great success stories that have taken years to achieve and yet seeing something first hand can really show what leadership and team working can achieve. Well done to all the team at Acumen Business Law for modelling the benefits of team working and leadership.

What examples of great leadership and team working can you share? Why not leave a comment.
